"instead of assuming you may be protected, understand the level of protection you have"
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are organic chemical compounds released as gases from certain solids or liquids.
These gases evaporate under normal indoor atmospheric conditions and can be easily inhaled. There can be varying sources of VOCs in the manufacturing environment.
Studies show that VOC concentrations are 2 to 5 times higher indoors than outdoors, which may lead to both short- and long-term health problems.
Short term exposure can result in headaches, nausea, dizziness and irritation of the respiratory tract and the eyes.
Long-term exposure (months to years) to high levels of VOC can cause liver damage, kidney damage and cancer.
Usually, this level of damage will only occur through prolonged chronic exposure to high levels of VOC.
In a metalworking fluid environment we see VOC gases from the oil based fluids, tramp oil and bacteria growing within the fluid and are exposed to this when the mist is inhaled. VOC's 'travel' so can affect areas away from the machines.
what to do
It is important to identify the sources of VOCs, eliminate, reduce use or improve air filtration to reduce exposure risk
note
VOC levels can vary and often accumulate during periods of low factory activity and a loss of natural airflow. Standard air filtration units will not readily remove VOCs from the atmosphere.
